Preach the Word With Urgency – Living and Sharing the Gospel in Every Season

When the Apostle Paul wrote his final letter to young Timothy, he knew his time was running short. From a cold prison cell, facing execution, Paul penned words that would echo through centuries: "I charge you before God and Christ Jesus... preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season."

But what does it really mean to preach with urgency? And why should this ancient charge matter to believers living along the beautiful Emerald Coast today?

The Weight of an Official Messenger

Paul didn't give Timothy suggestions or friendly advice. The word "charge" carries the weight of a solemn oath, like swearing someone into office. When Timothy received hands laid upon him by Paul, he became more than a young preacher: he became an official messenger of the Kingdom of God.

Here's the thing: if you're born again and you've got a Bible, you carry that same official messenger status. You're not just carrying your own ideas or personal opinions. You're an ambassador of the Most High God!

Think about that for a moment. Every conversation you have, every interaction at work, every encounter at Publix or on the beach: you're representing the King of Kings. That's both an incredible privilege and a weighty responsibility.

What "In Season and Out of Season" Really Means

Paul told Timothy to be ready to preach "in season and out of season." Let me paint a picture of what this looks like in our daily lives here in Destin.

In Season might be:

  • When your coworker asks about your weekend and mentions they've been going through a tough time
  • When someone at the Harbor Walk brings up questions about life and purpose
  • When a neighbor mentions they've been thinking about visiting one of the churches in Destin, Florida

Out of Season looks different:

  • When two guys at work are discussing last night's game, and you walk over and immediately launch into how "Jesus is the real winner"
  • When someone's clearly stressed and busy, but you feel compelled to share the gospel anyway
  • When the timing feels awkward, unwelcome, or inconvenient

Here's what Paul understood: we don't always get to choose perfect timing. Sometimes the Holy Spirit opens doors when we least expect it. Other times, He calls us to speak truth even when it's not welcomed.

Why? Because you don't know if the person you're talking to will draw another breath after that conversation.

The Urgency of Our Emerald Coast Community

Living in Destin, I've gotten my finger on the pulse of this beautiful city over the past four years. And honestly? What I see concerns me deeply.

We have plenty of church-going in our community, but not enough Christ-following. We have beautiful church buildings and active congregations, but too many people who blend in so well with the world that you can't tell they belong to Jesus.

Drive down Hwy 98 on any given Sunday, and you'll see cars filling the parking lots of various Destin churches. But drive through our community the rest of the week, and ask yourself: can you tell the difference between those who claim Christ and those who don't?

As Spirit-filled believers, we're not called to external religious dress codes, but we should be recognizable as His people through our character, our priorities, and our urgency about eternal things.

Breaking Free from Convenience-Based Christianity

Here's a hard truth about our community: we often choose churches based on convenience rather than spiritual life. "What's the closest church to my house?" instead of "Where can I grow in Christ and be equipped to impact this community for His glory?"

But as Paul told Timothy, urgency doesn't wait for convenience. If it's alive, it's worth the drive. If it's spiritually dead, even the one in your backyard won't help you grow.

Real urgency means:

  • Interrupting your grocery shopping plans when God opens a door for ministry
  • Speaking truth even when it might cost you relationships
  • Choosing churches that challenge you to grow rather than ones that simply make you comfortable
  • Prioritizing eternal conversations over temporal small talk

The Heart Behind the Urgency

Some people hear this message and think it's about being pushy or aggressive with the gospel. That's not it at all. True urgency flows from love: the same love that drove Jesus to the cross.

When you truly believe that people without Christ face eternal separation from God, urgency becomes as natural as warning someone about an approaching hurricane. You wouldn't casually mention that a Category 5 storm is heading toward the Emerald Coast. You'd speak with passion, conviction, and genuine concern for their safety.

That's the heart behind preaching with urgency. It's not about winning arguments or proving you're right. It's about loving people enough to share the most important message they'll ever hear, regardless of whether it's convenient or welcome.

Practical Steps for Gospel Urgency

1. Start with Prayer
Before your feet hit the floor each morning, ask God to open doors for gospel conversations. Ask Him to make you sensitive to His Spirit's leading throughout your day.

2. Cultivate Readiness
Keep your testimony sharp and your knowledge of Scripture fresh. You can't share what you don't know or give what you don't have.

3. Look for Divine Appointments
God orchestrates encounters daily. That "coincidental" conversation at Walmart might be His setup for you to share hope with someone who desperately needs it.

4. Embrace Discomfort
Growth happens outside your comfort zone. If sharing the gospel always feels easy and natural, you might not be reaching the people who need it most.

5. Focus on Faithfulness, Not Results
Your job is to be faithful to deliver the message. The Holy Spirit's job is to work in hearts. You're responsible for the delivery, not the reception.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

Paul warned Timothy that a time would come when people wouldn't tolerate sound doctrine. Instead, they'd accumulate teachers who tell them what their itching ears want to hear.

Friends, we've arrived at that time.

People in our community are choosing churches based on what makes them feel good rather than what challenges them to grow. They want their lifestyle choices affirmed rather than corrected by Scripture.

But that makes our role as urgent messengers even more critical. In a culture that's increasingly hostile to biblical truth, we need believers who will speak God's Word whether it's popular or not, convenient or not, welcome or not.

Your Calling as an Urgent Messenger

Whether you attend FaithCoast or any of the other solid, Bible-based churches in Destin FL, your calling remains the same: be ready to share the hope within you at all times.

This doesn't mean you need to be perfect or have all the answers. It means you need to be available, alert, and obedient to the Spirit's leading in your daily life.

Some of you reading this have been Christians for years but have never shared your faith with a single person. Others have grown comfortable with "convenient Christianity": following Jesus when it doesn't interfere with your plans.

But what if God is calling you to step into the urgent messenger role He's designed for every believer?

Taking Your Next Step

The beautiful thing about serving God along the Emerald Coast is that we're surrounded by people from all over the world: tourists, military families, retirees, young professionals: all searching for meaning and purpose.

Your neighborhood, your workplace, your favorite restaurant, the beach you visit: they're all mission fields waiting for urgent messengers to share the hope of Christ.

Are you ready to embrace that calling? Are you prepared to speak truth whether it's in season or out of season?

The harvest is plentiful here in Destin, but the laborers are few. Maybe it's time for you to join the ranks of those who preach the Word with holy urgency, knowing that eternity hangs in the balance for everyone you encounter.

Your community needs urgent messengers. Your neighbors need the hope you carry. The question is: will you be ready when God opens the door?

If you're looking for a church community that will equip you for this urgent calling, we'd love to have you visit us at FaithCoast. Learn more about our heart for reaching the Emerald Coast at faithcoastdestin.com.
